The Post Cemetery is on a secluded part of Fort Meade, off Rock Avenue. Gated in, the cemetery is routinely groomed and plain tombstones remain intact. Almost immediately upon walking through the gates Nov. 5, Italian flags could be seen waving in the wind, next to two headstones on either side of the cemetery.

Two Italian prisoners of war are buried there; one-time World War II enemies were being remembered. The flags waved next to each Italian soldier’s headstone — their names were Pasquino Savigini and Agostine Maffeis.

At 10:30 a.m., Col. John W. Ives, installation commander, and Installation Command Sgt. Maj. Earl L. Ware joined Lt. Col. Claudio Totteri, assistant military attaché at the Italian Embassy in Washington, D.C., and Warrant Officer Manuel Saetti, also of the embassy, in the wreath laying ceremony in remembrance of the Italian soldiers.

Savigini and Maffeis died while at Fort Meade. According to Fort Meade officials, they are the only two Italian POWs of World War II buried here. These soldiers were not sent home because next-of-kin were never found.

During the war, Fort Meade served as a prisoner of war Information Bureau. Starting in 1943, Italian POWs were housed here, some in tents off Simonds Road. There were 1,632 Italian POWs originally shipped here. Later, in May

of 1944, Fort Meade was activated as a camp for German

POWs.
