LColombo Inviato 12 Aprile, 2014 Segnala Share Inviato 12 Aprile, 2014 (modificato) A quick research shows that there was an Alfonso Bariati, seaman, listed among the dead of the Betasom submarine Alessandro Malaspina. The Malaspina however was sunk in September 1941, not on 22 March, and no bodies were ever found. My guess is, since it appears that for the submarines which were sunk, all the casualties (both the men who were killed in the sinking and those who had died previously, for instance during gun battles against merchants, or washed overboard, or as a result of air strike) are listed together like they had all died in the sinking, that probably Bariati was killed in a bombing or accident (or as a result of an illness) while in Betasom, and was buried there (the Malaspina was indeed at Bordeaux on 22 March 1941, as she ended her previous patrol on 28 February and started the next on 23 April); then, his name has wrongly been listed among those who had died when the Malaspina was sunk. Same case for Angelo Farina, seaman of the submarine Pietro Calvi. The Calvi was sunk on 15 July 1942. As the Calvi was at sea on 8 December 1940 (she had left on 3 December) I think he was probably left ashore (maybe ill?) and died in Bordeaux, and for the same mistakes as above he is listed among the 35 men who died in the sinking in July 1942. Antonio Giusti (not Guisti) and Walter Pezzi were seamen of the submarine Dandolo. This boat was indeed in Bordeaux on 8 December 1940 (previous patrol ended on 15 November, next one began on 24 January 1941). This boat was one of the few Italian submarine which survived the war and I knew the names of Antonio Giusti and Walter Pezzi as two of the three casualties of her wartime service, but without knowing what had caused their death; now it appears that something happened, while in Bordeaux, which caused the deaths of two crew members of the Dandolo. There is an Angelo La Greca (sottocapo) among the dead of the submarine Capitano Tarantini, that was sunk by HMS Thunderbolt on 15 December 1940; as this happened just off the Gironde, it may be that some bodies were recovered and buried in Bordeaux, and that he was one of them. But the man in your list has Vincenzo and not Angelo as first name. And no date of death is mentioned. There may be more, but I am pretty sure that at least some of the names in your list are misspelled and this causes some problems. I however noticed that five deaths, including the one from the Calvi and the two from the Dandolo, seem to have occurred on the same date, 8 December 1940: maybe a bombing on Betasom on that day? LColombo Inviato 12 Aprile, 2014 Segnala Share Inviato 12 Aprile, 2014 I have checked, and I answer to my own question: yes. In the night of 8 December 1940, Bordeaux was bombed by 44 RAF bombers (29 Wellingtons from 49th, 115th and 149th Squadrons, and 15 Whitleys from 4th Group) which caused little damage but, it now appears, some victims among the crew, including the five casualties listed above. lazer_one* Inviato 13 Aprile, 2014 Segnala Share Inviato 13 Aprile, 2014 This list was made after the war in order to transfer the bodies from France to Italy: most of the the information comes from the graves. The main event was the bombing of dec. 1940: since that moment the seamen were transferrede to Gradignan. Citare Link al commento Condividi su altri siti
hakobordeaux Inviato 13 Aprile, 2014 Autore Segnala Share Inviato 13 Aprile, 2014 Ok Thank you for your answer ! The bombing during the night of 8/9 december 1940 was the signal to leave the harbour to Gradignan far away from bombs ! Have a nice week end ! For your information, this study will complete a new booklet relating to the hospital Kriegslazaret Robert Picqué where these men died / were carried ! I have found about 10% of the names of soldier died in Bordeaux during the war ! I open the bunker-hospital in september during the " european heritage days" !
