Sì Pinin, più che possibile: frequente. Il RINA (Registro Italiano NAvale) non vietava le omonimie, e quindi non erano rare: dozzine di SAN GIUSEPPE, di SAN GIOVANNI, di MARIA ... Il POLA nuovo (motonave) era stato requisito come Incr. ausiliario, come la gemella ROVIGNO. Ci ho navigato diverse volte con la Navigazione Toscana (Piombino-Portoferraio) ed era una nave gradevole (anni '50, purtroppo..). Il vecchio POLA era a Lero o a Rodi all'8 settembre, poi passò al servizio degli Alleati a Cipro: cercherò qualche notizia in più. Quote
de domenico Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 (edited) POLA (ii), motonave, was requisitioned by the RM on completing, in May 1941, as a rather pompously so-called "Incrociatore Ausiliario" (of 451 grt, 1 x 76 mm, 3 x 20 mm) number D.28. Sister-ship ROVIGNO followed suit in Jan. 1942 as D.29 (3 x 20 mm alone). POLA made a total of 231 sorties in 2 1/2 years, ROVIGNO 277. Both were captured by the Germans in Sept. 1943 at Valona, where ROVIGNO was sunk by RN MTBs on Sept. 22, while on board POLA, which had sailed bound for Trieste, the Italian crew managed to overpower the German prize crew and to reach Brindisi on Sept. 21. POLA (i), piroscafo, sailed from Rhodes harbour on Sept. 11, 1943, under orders from the local admiral, who made all the Italian shipping in harbour sail away, in the eve of the surrender of Italian local ground forces to the Germans, to reach Leros. She was under the command of sublt Giuseppe Walles and had port captain de Rossi from Rhodes on board. On meeting MAS 540, under ten.vasc. Gabriele Lombardo, she was ordered to go instead to Castelrosso (Castelorizo), in British hands, which she reached on the 12th. There, she formed a part of a small convoy bound for Cyprus, made up of MVed POSTIGLIONI, two tugs and four fishing vessels/auxiliaries, escorted by RN MLs 357 & 358, sailing that same evening, reaching Famagusta roads on Sept. 13 and entering harbour two days later. On Sept. 17 it was decided that most of the small vessels should proceed to Haifa, while POLA and a tug (IMPERO) stayed at Famagusta: starting in October, she was employed - under the Italian flag and with her Italian crew - to support British troop movements to and from Castelorizo and for local services at Cyprus.
