Messaggi raccomandati

Buongiorno a Tutti,

An Alarm in the Hideout

It must have been about the middle of March when we were all in the hideout that Yanni Mantàs came running in a great fright, saying, 'Quick, they're on top of us.' 'What's happened?' we all asked, jumping up.

Two hundred yards down the hillside - twenty Germans heading straight for us!' We seized our stuff and put it on our shoulders; then with Mantàs following a little way behind, we headed straight for the deep cave five hundred yards away - Mr Pavlo, Harry, the cook and I remembered Mr Pavlo's words, said as a joke, about Colonel Tsiphakis being frjghtened of the Germans. Each time he sent me there with a message he would say: 'Did you find him, George? Hadn't he run off to Lasithi?'

While we ran, bowed down under wireless sets, batteries, rucksacks and so on, trying to make the cave before the Germans could see us or catch us, I stopped all of a sudden and turned to Mr Pavlo, who was running behind me and shouted, 'Mr Pavlo!'

'What is it?' he answered.

I answered in a low serious voice.

'Four more for Lasithi!' and he laughed.

We reached the cave and hid inside. From there we observed all that was going on; and nothing was happening at all. It was not hard to make out what it was all about, however, as the same trick had been done before. The news was pure imagination, and laid on to frighten us so that we should move to another area. They thought that our position there was no longer safe, wanted us to go, but couldn't make up their minds to tell us so outright.

But all this was our fault, Harry's that is, who strolled all over the place making our refuge common knowledge in the district. I brought the subject up with Mr Pavlo, and went through all the reasons why we ought to move. But he stubbornly denied them all, and said we would never find such a good hideout again. And in a way he was right, it was wonderfully fitted for our work. Close to the Germans and all the main communications and the sea.

We had whatever information was needed at once. Any special point we wanted to know from Canea or Retimo was cleared up with the greatest ease and speed. When one of us didn't go into Retimo for information, one of Colonel Tsiphakis's messengers would do it, and news from Canea would be brought by one of our people by any Greek car or bus - and quite often by a German vehicle - or by bicycle, as far as Episkopi, where the policeman brought it on to Dryadé straight away. We had wireless schedules with Cairo as many times as we wanted and every item was tapped off as soon as it arrived.

Those days we had been carefully watching the loading of a cargo into a ship of seven thousand tons which lay at anchor in Suda Bay. It was taking on military stores and a quantity of German and Italian troops. We learnt the day and hour of departure, and signalled it to Cairo. And we saw her, early next morning, moving out from among all the other shipping, and then sailing away from the Gulf of Suda. We watched her through binoculars, and at exactly nine-fifteen, the submarine's torpedo hit her. All the other shipping at once gave her a wide berth, and about twenty aeroplanes arrived on the scene and began dropping depth charges all round into the sea. Exactly three hours later, at twelve-fifteen, during which time she had remained motionless (stopped by the first attack), the second torpedo struck. Then she began to break in half, and finally sank.

In spite of all the advantages there were several reasons for our departure, and one of these, according to one of our sources in Retimo, was that the well-known traitor and German cat's-paw, Alexomanolis, had learnt of our stay in that region, and was offering twenty okas of rice - an almost unheard-of thing in those days - to anyone who would guide the way to our lair, or to the people hiding us. And other informants of ours - notably Maria and Calliope Petrakis, the schoolmistresses of Kouphi and Episkopi - had warned us that everybody knew exactly where we were hiding.

But in spite of all this, Mr Pavlo didn't want us to move.(1)
