Io mi riferivo all'opera viva.

:s10: :s10: :s10:

Hello, and thank you very much Vespucci for your kind words.

Vespucci kindly gave me a link to this fine forum. I then showed the forum to the managing Director of Amati, Sergio Marletti today. He must have liked it because he was reading the Bismarck and Vanguard threads for over two hours – he was very impressed by the level of workmanship.

I design the Victory Models kits and Amati kits, I live in Masio (in-between Asti and Alessandria), and commute to Torino each day. We (my wife and family) moved here from the UK last year, because of the work with Amati, and we love it here (Although we have been snowed in for almost a week!)

I started the designs for Vanguard back in 2004, when I was in the UK (I have been working for Amati since 2001). Overall, the development was well over a full year’s work, from initial research to finalising the drawings, laser cut and brass etch files, and of course, building the prototype to ensure the parts fit and work as they should. It is the drawings for the plans that take the most time, over two thirds of overall development time were dedicated to these, as I now how important (as a modeller myself) drawings are.

We changed a few things for Vanguard shortly before the release; most notable is the main material, which is now high grade MDF. I tested this with another new project, the Surprise, and it worked very well, and was much easier to sand. The copper plates were changed right at the last minute, and this is due mainly to Sergio Marletti; he is an absolute perfectionist (he also applies the final touches to the plans and instruction layouts – no matter how well I think I have laid everything out, he always manages to make my efforts look amateur!), and insisted we design a better way of simulating the copper plates, which we did using photo etched parts. These are a lot more expensive than standard pressed copper plates, but for a kit like Vanguard, it is the end result that matters.

I note that the etched brass ships wheel was mentioned. It is never easy deciding on the best material for certain parts. When I look at original navy Board models, the wheels are usually very finely crafted in ivory. The best material to achieve this kind of fidelity is photo etched brass – wooden or cast metal wheels always look too over scale. We have to be very careful when using cast resin parts for kits, as modellers in certain countries absolutely hate any kind of plastic in a wooden kit. This is not a view I share at all, and believe any appropriate material should be used if it gives the correct end result (I even used plastic profile strip for some models I have made, when they were painted)

We have a lot of new developments for the future, the next being a Sister Ship to HMS Fly, the HMS Pegasus. After this, we should have a very detailed and accurate Elizabethan galleon – this will have all fully detailed gun decks (which are staggered and a nightmare when designing!), even the stern chaser deck is included, along with all cannon and carriages, no dummy barrels. I would like to have enough time to complete the 64th scale prince one day, too!

If you have and questions or need information, I am always happy to help whenever I can.

Ciao

Chris

It is with a great pleasure that I welcome Chris to this forum.

I have to say I was really impressed by the quality of the stuff used on Victory's series' kits, since from the HMS Fly kit (Vanguard is really at the top).

I wanted to know if you chosed these models for a reason. Have you ever thought to make the battleship RN ROMA?? :s02: :s02:

My best compliments again for your wonderful work and the matching selection of the materials.

Hello Chris, and welcome to the board

I'm feeling a bit ashamed as I criticized your work without knowing why you made such choiches about the materials; I think it's since I've been deceived by having bought an horrible kit for a lot of money, that I've become really evil and I started criticising every other model I saw :s03: So, I apologize.

I couldn't imagine that there were such constraints, now it's clear.

(Me too, I wish to ask you if you could try to convince you boss to issue a good model of battleship Roma :s01: )

It's really a pleasure to have yur sign on our forum, I'm very proud about this and (it's a tradition!) I vitually offer to all Betasom, that we usually call "the Base", a drink of Spalletti, a good italian wine.

Your story on how Vangiuard was "born" is more than interesting! and, time for project (form ideas to the shelf) was 4 years: have I understand right?

Thank you for the warm welcome.

Secondo Marchett - no need for apologies regarding criticism, comments, both good and bad help us to make the next kits even better. Many years ago, I built a few Mantua kits, including the Sovereign of the Seas, which I 'redesigned' as best as I could to make it look like the real thing. Since then, I have tried to design kits as I would like them to be, as a modeller - which means adding as much detail as I can get away with, both seen and unseen. I remember my very first plank on frame kit, a Billings Bounty. You had to cut out and carve the decoration yourself (!!) and the boat was a block of wood which you had to carve! That is the complete opposite of how I think a kit should be. I always listen to what modellers say, good and bad. With this in mind, the kit of Pegasus I am now completing will have many changes from the Fly kit - this includes new photo etched stunsail boom brackets, instead of copper strip, a lot more blocks, rigging a proper hawse rope, photo etched copper plates (as in Vanguard), a ships boat, stowed on spare spare in-between the gallows, more drawings and twice as much written instructions. (Although I don't think Amati will be happy having to translate so much English into Italian :s02: )

The Vanguard was four years in development, but the total time was about one full year, with minor changes along the way. (At the last minute, I was asked to include sail template and sail rigging plans)

When you talk of Roma, is this the Italian battleship from World war 2?

What about a very detailed model of a Roman war galley, complete with catapults, corvus etc? (I have studied Roman history a lot)

Each subject is chosen carefully – as soon as I seen the plans for the Swan Class, of which Fly is one, I knew this would be perfect, as it would be a perfect size, attractive hull shape, nice decoration, a full deck of guns and ship rigged – everything most people want from a model (and their wives like it too!)

Some subjects are chosen because they are famous, as a modeller, I would prefer to build Collingwood’s Royal Sovereign, rather than Victory, but the truth is, famous subjects outsell anything else (although I think the Fly has been the exception to this rule)

What plank of frame period ships would the Italians be interested is seeing?

Dear Chris......

"Regia Nave ROMA" was an Italian Vittorio Veneto class battleship that served in the Regia Marina during World War II. She was built in 1940.

http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:RM_Roma.jpg

Here Giancarlo Barbieri's Roma:

https://www.betasom.it/forum/index.php?show...=corazzata+roma

For me the Ship I really would like to have in kit (scale 1:200). It would be great to have Amati realizing an italian ship from WWII! :s03: :s03: :s03:

It would be great to have a "triremi Romana" too, maybe scale 1:32, so it would be possible to use the figures we can find and buy.

Andrea's miniatures made one in resin, but it has a not affordable price.

By the way, I think for many of us the best timeline to choose is WWII's one.

Do you think it can be told to your Boss? :s02:

Ciao and thanks for your interesting posts.

Dear Chris,

It's a pleasure to can discuss with you about your HMS Vanguard. For me is the best wooden model I've ever seen in my short experience!

I agree with your idea about the choose for what ships it's good to make a kit. In fact, despite I'm a great fan of Horatio Nelson, I think can be more interesting have a model of Collingwood's Royal Sovereign, instead of HMS Victory.

To answer your question if can be interesting have a model of a War Roman Galley, I think it can be wonderful if it's very detailed and in great scale. As Vespucci said, with a model in great scale, we can chose the perfect figures to use to complete the kit.

I'm not as the other members of the forum, in fact I prefer more sailing ships (about 1700-1800 period) instead of WWII ones, but is only my opinion and, however, an Amati model of RN Roma can be a lot attractive for many modellers in which can be I.

P.S.:I apologize with you for my English, but I can assure you I'm trying to improve it.

Thanks for your interesting posts about the realization of HMS Vanguard kit and my congratulations for your great work!

Hi Makarov,

I wanted to make a note.

It is not that I prefere to see an italian ship from WWII because I love particulary some sailing ships or sailing boats. I made 4 sailing ships and 3 sailing boats and now my interest went towards Bismarck from Hachette just to change object, but I assure you if the ROMA was available I would have chosen it immediately.

Beside, the availability of national and international ship models is full of sailing ships and there is no trace of WWII ships, mainly if italian ones. No ship from italian modellers too, like Amati,

Mantuamodel, Mamoli, Atalieri, Corel etc......

This is the reason I would like a special interest toward that timeline. :s02:

Ciao :s55: :s55:

PS: I apologize for my english too.... !!!!

Vespucci.

......

Ciao Makarov,

Ciao,

Sorry I haven't responded in a while - but have been working long hours over the past weeks, and I don't get home until 7.30 in the evening (later sometimes, when Trenitalia decide to delay/cancel my train home!) I thought that the UK was bad for snow and bad weather! Italy beats it, but has much better summers!

I apologise also, because by now I should be able to speak Italian, but we have UK TV here and people at Amati speak to me in English - I will make more of an effort to study the great language.

Wolf58, if you want to try a Fly but are unsure of the complexity, I am always on hand to help (You can contact me via my profile), and my boss can translate from English to Italian, so that you can understand. (I have almost completed the Sister ship, pegasus, which has even more detail and all new brass etched parts - the instructions go into even more detail - my boss is going to kill me when he realises how much English he has to translate into Italian! :s12:

We may do the Roma at some point, but not for a while, we have so many projects we first need to finish. I think the problem for WW2 battleships is that less people want them, compared to the period ships. Plus, when people choose a battleship, most will buy the equivilent plastic kit. However, it would be nice to have a really well detailed Italian subject.

We shall definitely be doing a large scale Roman galley, at a scale to suite some of the best produced figures (and perhaps a carthaginian one to go with it).

Dear Chris,

I don't think the interest in WWII ships is mainly directed to plastic kits. Bismarck from Hachette is an example of it (and your boss knows it so well): it had a lot of success, even if there are many plastic kits in scale 1:350 of the same ship (and there are not for ROMA). The same thing can be said about Yamato from DE Agostini.

Of course, to make ROMA, it would be necessary to create the hull in resine o ABS (as Amati did for Dorade or Grand Banks). However, these are choices of your industry so - sadly - we, poor modellers, cannot change them. (By the way... I am certain many of us on this board would love to assemble this ship!!)

About the large scale Roman Galley, great thing! Many years ago I made one as a gift for my wife, who is an archeologist, and it was from Mantuamodel. But I have to say it was a very poor and not detailed model. I don't spend a word for Andrea's Miniatures' model, because of the high cost of that kit, so there are no other kits to assemble and it would be great to see one of them. If you decide to make it, this is my advice: put an already sewed sail set !!!!

:s03: :s03: :s03: ).

Let us know if the galley is already being considered (I made a self made one of Marine Republic of Pisa).

Ciao.

Chris, What do you think about Italian school ship "Palinuro" from marina militare italiana???

@ Chris: I really agree with the others about the Palinuro, it's a well-known ship that may make for a great model: but if you wish to start a project of an italian ship similar to HMS Vanguard, I suggest you to search for something like a frigate of the Neapolitan or Venetian Navy. It could also be interesting to have a model of those early paddle-steamers like the Gulnara from the Sardinian Navy, tiny but fascinating
