Pronto il più potente sommeribile mai realizzato dalla flotta di Sua Maestà: il reattore nucleare lo rende autosufficiente per 25 anni.

GRAN BRETAGNA - Il suo nome è «Astute» (Astuto) ed è il nuovo sottomarino della Royal Navy, la marina inglese; il più grande e potente sommeribile mai realizzato dalla flotta navale di Sua Maestà. L'«Astute Combat Management System» (ACMS) è stato presentato martedì ai media. I dettagli del gigantesco sommergibile, costruito in oltre sei anni di lavoro presso i cantieri della «Bea-System» nella cittadina di Barrow-in-Furness in Inghilterra, sono impressionanti. Queste le cifre: 7800 tonnellate il peso, 97 metri la lunghezza, 2,33 miliardi il costo totale mentre 98 sono le cuccette per il personale di bordo. Inoltre, potrà lanciare siluri «Spearfish» e missili «Cruise-Tomahawk» ad una lunghezza di 1400 miglia, cioè dal Canale della Manica fino nell'Africa del Nord.

 

 

 

 

 

 

25 ANNI SENZA CARBURANTE - E' stato progettato per generare autonomamente aria e acqua all'interno del battello, ma probabilmente la caratteristica più straordinaria di cui dispone è quella che non avrà bisogno di rifornimento: il sottomarino nucleare sarà autosufficiente per 25 anni, cioè per tutto l'arco della sua esistenza nei mari. Grazie al reattore Astute sarà in grado di circumnavigare il globo per più di 40 volte, senza neppure venire a galla. La marina inglese sarà dotata di tre esemplari che verranno varati tra il 2009 e il 2011. «E' il Manchester United dei sottomarini», ha detto il capitano Mike Davis-Marks, alludendo alla squadra inglese dei Red Devils che ha trionfato nella Premier League. Il sottomarino, i cui costi hanno sforato sia il budget iniziale che i tempi di consegna, è estremamente silenzioso per la sua grandezza. «Fa meno rumore di una balena», hanno sottolineato dai cantieri della Bea-System. E' anche il primo sommergibile a non disporre del classico periscopio; usufruirà di un più moderno tubo a fibre ottiche, equipaggiato da un sistema di monitoraggio a raggi infrarossi e sensori termici.

Cercando qua e là qualche notizia tecnica in più, mi sono imbattuto in questa scheda, che posto a beneficio di tutti

Noto che la suite sonar dovrebbe essere quella montata nel 2003 sui Trafalgar...praticamente il primo verrebbe consegnato con un sistema sonar "vecchio" di 6 anni...vorrei sapere dai più esperti se questo periodo di tempo è accettabile da un punto di vista dell'evoluzione tecnologica dei sistemi...

 

 

SSN Astute Class Attack Submarine, United Kingdom

The Royal Navy's Astute class submarine is a nuclear-powered attack submarine which is to replace the five Swiftsure class submarines, launched between 1973 and 1977 and approaching the end of their operational life.

 

"The Astute class nuclear-powered attack submarine is to replace the five Swiftsure class submarines, launched in the 1970s."The initial order quantity is three, but the UK MOD has stated that it is planning a second batch of three. The performance specification of the Astute is an extension of the performance of the Trafalgar Class Batch 1 fleet of the Royal Navy's Second Submarine Squadron based at Devonport. The Astute Class submarines will be based at Faslane in Scotland.

 

BAE Systems Astute Class Ltd is prime contractor for the project and the submarines are being built at BAE Systems Marine Barrow shipyard. The Astute ships are to be named Astute, Ambush and Artful.

 

It is planned that the three submarines will enter service in 2009, 2010 and 2011. The keel for the first-of-class Astute was laid in January 2001 and it is planned to be launched in August 2007 and delivered in August 2008. The keel of Ambush was laid in October 2003 and that of Artful in March 2005.

 

BAE Systems is in discussion with the UK MOD for a fourth Astute Class submarine and a decision is expected in early 2007.

 

Trafalgar Batch 1 submarines are to be decommissioned by 2022, beginning with HMS Trafalgar in 2008.

 

COMBAT SYSTEM

 

The Astute Combat Management System (ACMS) is being supplied by BAE Systems Insyte (formerly Alenia Marconi Systems) and is a development of the Submarine Command System (SMCS) currently in service in all classes of UK submarines.

 

ACMS receives data from the sonars and other sensors and, through advanced algorithms and data handling, displays real time images on the command consoles. Factory acceptance of the operational software was received from the Astute Prime Contract Office in July 2002.

 

EADS Defence & Security Systems Ltd and EADS Hagenuk Marinekommunikation were awarded the contract to provide the external communications systems for the Astute in August 2005.

 

Strachan and Henshaw are to provide the Weapon Handling and Launch System (WHLS).

 

MISSILES

 

The Astute will be equipped with the Tomahawk Block IV (Tactical Tomahawk) cruise missile from Raytheon fired from the 533mm torpedo tubes.

 

"The Astute class submarines will be equipped with the Tomahawk Block IV (Tactical Tomahawk) cruise missile."Tomahawk is equipped with the TERCOM terrain contour mapping-assisted inertial navigation system. The terrain contour mapping for use over land combines onboard radar altimeter measurements with terrain mapping data installed in the missile.

 

Block II added Digital Scene Matching Area Correlation (DSMAC) guidance. Block III improvements include an improved propulsion system and Navstar Global Positioning System (GPS) guidance capability. The GPS provides location and velocity data of the missile for precision targeting.

 

Tomahawk has a range of up to 1,000 miles and a maximum velocity of 550mph. Block IV includes a two-way satellite link that allows reprogramming of the missile in flight and transmission of Battle Damage Indication (BDI) imagery.

 

TORPEDOES

 

Astute will have six 533mm torpedo tubes, and will be equipped with Spearfish torpedoes and mines. There is capacity for a total of 36 torpedoes and missiles.

 

The Spearfish torpedo from BAE Systems is wire-guided with an active / passive homing head. The range is 65km at 60kt. Spearfish is fitted with a directed-energy warhead.

 

COUNTERMEASURES

 

The countermeasures suite will include decoys and Electronic Support Measures (ESM). The The ESM system is the Thales Sensors Outfit UAP(4). Outfit UAP(4) has two multi-function antenna arrays which are mounted on the two non-hull penetrating optronics masts from Thales (formerly Pilkington) Optronics and McTaggart Scott.

 

Astute Class submarines are to be fitted with the Royal Navy's new Eddystone Communications band Electronic Support Measures (CESM) system, also to be fitted to the Trafalgar Class submarines. The Eddystone system is being developed by DML of Devonport UK, with Argon ST of the USA. It will provide advanced communications, signal intercept, recognition, direction-finding and monitoring capability.

 

SENSORS

 

Astute is fitted with I-band navigation radars. The sonar is the Thales Underwater Systems (formerly Thomson Marconi Sonar) 2076 integrated passive / active search and attack sonar suite with bow, intercept, flank and towed arrays. Sonar 2076 has been fitted to three Trafalgar class submarines and entered service in February 2003.

 

Atlas Hydrographic will provide the DESO 25 high-precision echosounder, to be fitted on the Astute. DESO 25 is capable of precise depth measurements down to 10,000m.

 

"It is planned that the three submarines will enter service in 2009, 2010 and 2011."Astute will have two non-hull-penetrating CM010 optronic masts developed by Thales Optronics. McTaggart Scott will supply the masts. The CM010 mast includes thermal imaging, low light TV and colour CCD TV sensors.

 

Raytheon Systems Ltd has been contracted to provide the Successor IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) naval transponder system for the Astute class.

 

PROPULSION

 

The nuclear power will be provided by the Rolls-Royce PWR 2 pressurised water reactor. The long-life core fitted on the PWR 2 means that refuelling will not be necessary in the service life of the submarine.

 

The other main items of machinery are two Alsthom turbines, and a single shaft with a Rolls-Royce pump jet propulsor, consisting of moving rotor blades within a fixed duct. There are two diesel alternators, one emergency drive motor and one auxiliary retractable propeller. CAE Electronics is to provide the digital, integrated controls and instrumentation system for steering, diving, depth control and platform management.

 

The PWR 2 second-generation nuclear reactor was developed for the Vanguard Class Trident submarines. Current generations of PWR would allow submarines to circumnavigate the world about 20 times, whereas the latest development of PWR would allow circumnavigation 40 times without refuelling.

 

The major equipment components in the development of PWR 2 are the reactor pressure vessels from Babcock Energy, main coolant pumps from GEC and from Weir, and protection and control instrumentation from Siemens Plessey and Thorn Automation.

The Royal Navy’s largest and most powerful attack submarine, the first-of-class Astute, is now entering the final stages of preparation for the launch which will take place at the BAE Systems shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness on 8th June, 2007.

 

With just one month to go before the submarine emerges from the 25,000m² Devonshire Dock Hall build facility, much of the hull is still shrouded in coverings to allow work to continue on applying more than 39,000 acoustic tiles that will mask the vessel’s sonar signature but and help to make Astute the most stealthy submarine ever operated by the Royal Navy.

 

Commodore Steve Lloyd, Director of the Defence Equipment and Support Submarine Production Team said; “Work is on schedule to deliver the first of the Astute class to the Royal Navy in August 2008 with an in-service date of January 2009.”

 

The Astute class is the largest, most capable and widely deployable attack submarines ever operated by the Royal Navy. It has improved communications systems to support joint operations and an enhanced ability to operate in shallower littoral environments compared with previous classes.

 

As well as supporting the deterrent, Astute is designed to undertake a range of other tasks including support of land forces, land attack using Tomahawk cruise missiles, and intelligence gathering. Once deployed, Astute is designed not to require refuelling throughout her full service life - in excess of 25 years - and can patrol for 90 days, remaining undetected thousands of miles from home and hundreds of metres underwater.

 

BAE Systems Submarine Solutions is the prime contractor for the Astute Class of nuclear-powered submarine, responsible for the design, build and initial in-service support of the three 7,800 tonne vessels - Astute, Ambush and Artful - currently under construction at the shipyard.

prima di leggerlo vi prego di notare chi è l'autore dell'articolo.

 

il sunto è che gli Astute hanno completato le prove di lancio con armi da esercizio, o meglio, se preferite, con i dummy.

in effetti quello che stanno impiegando nn è ancora l'arma da esercizio ma il semplice simulacro e ha lo scopo di testare l'efficacia del sistema di espulsione delle armi dai tubi. Niente che non sia stato fatto infinite volte da tutte le Marine in vari periodi della vita del sommergibile ma in questo articolo gli inglesi lo trasformano in un evento. potenza della pubblicità...

Astute Completes First Weapons Launch Test

BARROW, UK: The UK’s next-generation nuclear-powered attack submarine has successfully carried out its first firing trials on schedule, meeting another important requirement on the programme.

 

The first of class Astute has discharged a total of 10 dummy torpedoes and Tomahawk missiles from its torpedo tubes in the dock at BAE Systems in Barrow-in-Furness, completing the first stage of weapons firing tests.

 

Astute, which was rolled out in June and is due to enter service in January 2009, will carry more weapons than any other Royal Navy submarine. A demonstration of her ability to deploy her weapons is a vital part of the test and commissioning programme. The heavyweight Spearfish torpedo is designed for use against ships and submarines, while the Tomahawk missiles can carry out pinpoint strikes on targets more than 1000km inland.

 

Further test firings will take place before Astute leaves Barrow next year and they will continue throughout an intensive sea trials and crew training programme, leading up to live test firings which will be carried out on special naval ranges.

 

Both weapon types are discharged through the six torpedo tubes in the bow of Astute, using a high pressure water system to eject them. The one-tonne weapons surface a few metres from the submarine and are recovered for careful checks to ensure they exited cleanly from the tubes.

 

When the Astute class vessel enters service she will be the most advanced submarine ever operated by the Royal Navy with state of the art Sonar 2076 capable of tracking ship movements across thousands of miles of ocean, a digital optical mast replacing the traditional periscope, and a nuclear reactor fuelled for life. In addition to the first of class Astute, three other submarines are currently in build at the BAE Systems shipyard in Barrow.

Recentemente,con i sottomarini gli inglesi non hanno avuto vita facile, vi ricordo i quattro classe Upholder venduti dalla disperazione al Canada, il quale dopo mille problemi di affidabilità se ne vorrebbe disfare

Uno degli Upholder ceduti al Canada, il Chicoutimi (ex Upholder) ebbe un incendio grave che fece una vittima mentre era in navigazione in Atlantico. Sono spesso paragonati ai coetanei Kilo ma pare che i russi dopo qualche visita reciproca avvenuta nei primi anni '90, quando gli Upholder erano ancora inglesi, si siano dichiarati scettici su certe soluzioni adottate. Leggo poi sul Combat Fleet che sono stati acquisti nel '98 in leasing per 8 anni quindi, salvo variazioni, il periodo è scaduto.

Già è vero...è più il tempo che hanno passato in cantiere tra lavori di modifica/riparazione che quello in servizio attivo. Comunque dovrebbero rimanere in servizio ancora a lungo. Il Chicoutimi doveva ancora effettuare i lavori di riparaazione...

Tre foto delle prove a mare del nuovo battello nucleare britannico ASTUTE, partito da Barrow-in-Furness il 15 novembre e arrivato a Faslane nella Clyde il 20 novembre. Nell'articolo si dice che la novità più rilevante del battello, a parte il reattore Rolls Royce PWR-2 ad acqua pressurizzata, è il sistema ottico, composto di due "optronic masts" sviluppati dalla Thales, un sistema visuale senza penetrazione dello scafo che usa un collegamento elettronico per trasmettere le immagini dalle telecamere ad alta definizione ubicate nella testa del sensore alle console sul ponte di comando. I due alberi optronici sono dotati di sensori stabilizzati su tre assi capaci di produrre immagini HDTV a colori e all'infrarosso.

Un'altra foto delle prove in mare di HMS ASTUTE, non ancora in servizio nella Royal Navy. Si specifica che la nuova classe deve possedere maggiori capacità di attacco terrestre, di raccolta di intelligence e per operazioni delle forze speciali rispetto ai predecessori. Quindi un battello più grosso e più potente di tutti gli SSN precedenti, per imbarcare un nuovo sistema di gestione degli armamenti, un maggior carico di armi e un reattore più grosso, il PWR-2, progettato per durare l'intera vita utile del battello senza recoring. 7800 tonn. di dislocamento a pieno carico, con a bordo un mix di fino a 38 siluri Spearfish Heavyweight e missili da crociera Tomahawk Block IV.

Un poco di belle foto: esteticamente non è una meraviglia, ma queste immagini lo migliorano alquanto.

 

P.S. Nello stesso numero di "Ships Monthly" di marzo si dice che (per ora) le due portaerei della Royal Navy sono salve. Gli ultimi tagli del dicembre scorso riguardano il pensionamento di una squadriglia di Harrier (della RAF) e delle due navi HMS ROEBUCK (nave idrografica) e WALNEY (cacciamine classe SANDOWN), oltre al ritiro anticipato degli elicotteri più anziani dei tipi Lynx e Merlin Mk.1, che saranno sostituiti dai nuovi Wildcat e Merlin Mk.2. Gli ultimi Sea King Mk.4 e Mk.7, vecchi di oltre 40 anni, lasceranno il servizio nel 2016, sostituiti da Merlin Mk.1 e Mk.3 ex-RAF.

UK Government Go-Ahead for Fifth and Sixth Astute Submarines

 

BARROW-IN-FURNESS, UK: BAE Systems today welcomed news it had been given the go-ahead to begin constructing the fifth Astute class submarine and start the procurement process for a sixth vessel.

 

It follows a statement made earlier today by UK Secretary of State for Defence, Bob Ainsworth, in which he underlined the Government’s continuing support for the Astute programme.

 

The first of class Astute attack submarine is currently undertaking sea trials, the second (Ambush) is due to be launched later this year, and the third and fourth (Artful and Audacious) are both advanced in their construction.

 

The Secretary of State said: “The Government has made a contractual commitment to proceed with the initial build of Astute Boat 5 and long lead procurement activities associated with Astute Boat 6, at a total cost of over £300M. This commitment is necessary now to ensure a consistent workload for the UK’s submarine building industry.

 

“This investment will allow the timely delivery of the Astute class boats, which are the most advanced attack submarines ever ordered for the Royal Navy. Furthermore, since the same industrial skills, experience and capability are necessary to deliver the successor deterrent submarine programme, this investment will play a part in ensuring a smooth transition from the Astute programme to the successor deterrent.”

This order represents a key milestone in the overall Astute class submarine programme, and underlines the Government’s confidence in BAE Systems’ ability to deliver an advanced submarine capability for the Royal Navy.

 

“The commitment to the successor programme will allow BAE Systems to continue to recruit highly-skilled engineers to meet existing and future workload requirements, and progress the concept design work. Just as importantly, it will help sustain key skills and capabilities throughout our workforce, our suppliers and partners.

 

“The 7,400 tonne submarines will be the fifth and sixth of what is expected to be a seven boat Astute class, the largest and most powerful attack submarines ever built in Britain for the Royal Navy. The Astute class will replace the Swiftsure and Trafalgar class, which have been in-service since the 1970s and 1980s respectively.

 

Work is expected to start immediately at the shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness.

 

The first of class Astute submarine successfully completed its first phase of sea trials having left Barrow for its operational base in Faslane in November 2009. The programme of sea trials continues, including a successful first at-sea dive off the coast of Scotland.

 

Test and commissioning of second in class Ambush continues ahead of its scheduled launch later this year. The command deck module – the largest of the boat’s modules - has been shipped into third in class Artful, successfully completing one of the boat’s 2010 milestones. Construction of major steelwork for fourth in class Audacious continues after its keel was laid in 2009.

Se non calcolo male (vi prego verificate, gli zeri sono davvero troppi ... ) sono l'equivalente di circa 30 Tipo 212 ...

Interessante anche l'accenno al mantenimento delle competenze tecniche in vista dei futuri SSBN.

sono stati i miei stessi pensieri, però nel regno unito ho notato la tendenza a cercare di costruir enuovo piuttosto che riparare il vecchio.

 

circa il calcolo sui 212 io penso sarebbe molti di piu se ordinati con il ritmo con cui costriuscono gli Astute, una costruzione in serie farebbe risparmiare un discreto quantitativo di soldi e la cifra del primo contratto comprendeva forniture come i simulatori della Scuolasom o le nuove attrezzature per la linea di montaggio che, adesso, sono gia acqusiti.

Problemi per l'"Astute" alle prove in mare: ancora bloccata per un difetto che impedisce di srotolare la catena!

 

Mi sembra un po' troppo, per un SSN dell'ultimissima generazione!

Sembrerebbe che si fosse spinto troppo vicino alla costa, per effettuare un trasferimento di personale: normalmente, i sottomarini restano a non meno di 6 miglia dalla costa; l'"Astute" è stato visto la notte precedente a 4 miglia al largo e si è incagliato a mezzo miglio dalla costa.

 

Questa è la terza volta che un sottomarino nucleare s'incaglia, al largo delle coste scozzesi, negli ultimi dieci anni.

 

Ovviamente, la Royal Navy aprirà un'inchiesta sull'incidente e si ritiene probabile che il Comandante dell'"Astute", il Capitano di Fregata Andy Coles, sia portato dinanzi ad una corte marziale.
